Game description

R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate is a turn-based strategy tactical role-playing game and the sequel to R-Type Tactics as a spin-off of the main R-Type 2D side-scrolling arcade shooter series. The levels are structured as a side-scrolling shooter and the units of the two factions are placed on both sides of the hexagonal field. The fields are often larger than in the first game, can take place in large space facilities, and some of them have vertically scrolling stages. The opponents take turns instructing the units, with an important element that units cannot be turned around and can only attack in the direction they face. Not all matches have the player start on the left. At the start of the game the player creates a custom commander based on a number of parameters (gender, silhouette, birth place, favorite color, favorite food) and then takes on one of the three campaigns. Each campaign is based on a different faction. There is the first human faction, EAAF (Earth Allied Armed Forces), as an evolution of the Earth Space Corps in the first game, the second human faction, Granzera Revolutionary Army (GZRA), entirely new for this game and hailing from a base in Mars, and the alien Bydo Empire. The two human campaigns need to be completed first. Profiles from the first game can be carried over and are used for the Bydo campaign. Each faction has different units and abilities. The EAAF, for instance, has chosen to develop Force weapons based on Bydo alien technology, while the opposing revolutionary GZRA faction warns against the dependency on alien technology and use techniques such as Capture, Jamming (fog of war as masking) and Sonar (reveal de-synched units moving in subspace) instead of Force. This conflict between the two human factions is the main storyline and the game takes place in MC 0074, ten years after the events of the first game. This game features branching mission paths unlocked through choices in the journal. The game contains more than 200 different units often from existing R-Type titles such as R-Type Final and even In the Hunt. Each unit has specific statistics based on movement options, fuel, move cost, evasion rate, ammo, power, range, accuracy and so on. There are also unique abilities for base movement and attacks. Long-lasting units earn veterancy levels, which improve hit points or evasion levels. The EAAF's Force units are controlled separately or can attach themselves to other crafts. Along the way, new abilities are acquired making new units and upgrades available. New units are also provided after completing specific objectives, usually capturing structures. Progress is shown on a technology tree and certain very strong upgrades are available through DLC. Not all battles are limited to attacks, certain units can build space stations with a complex module system of up to 30 elements such as turrets, radars, docking bays, etc. These modules are tied to core blocks and once when of those is destroyed the entire station blows up. Almost all units can eventually be unlocked, including those of other factions. Players can also choose to leave missions early, taking the spoils gathered so far to run. Multiplayer is supported in competitive matches over Wi-Fi next to a cooperative two-player mode using Game Sharing and an ad hoc connection.
